New, Refurbished, and Used ABB Robots
New means a manipulator that has never run in production. New units are uncommon in a used-equipment inventory and are noted separately when available. Used robots are sold largely as removed from service, with condition based on inspection but without additional rework beyond basic testing. Refurbished robots have gone through a defined scope of work intended to return the unit to reliable operating condition, though the word refurbished is not standardized across sellers, so the exact scope should always be requested in writing.
Typical refurbishment work can include:
- Cleaning and degreasing the manipulator and controller cabinet
- Inspecting axis reducers for backlash, noise, and grease condition
- Replacing worn seals, cables, and dress-pack components
- Replacing controller and robot backup batteries
- Verifying mastering and calibration data
- Reloading and testing controller software
- Testing safety circuits and teach pendant function
- Running a loaded motion test on all axes
The trade-off is straightforward: a used, as-removed robot generally costs less but carries more unknowns, while a refurbished robot has had specific wear items addressed and tested, at correspondingly more work performed. Neither designation substitutes for a written scope of work and a condition report covering hour meters, alarm history, and software options before you commit to a unit.
Selecting the Right ABB Robot
Selecting the right ABB robot starts with payload, and payload must include the end-of-arm tooling weight, not just the part being handled. A robot rated for 60 kg with a 15 kg gripper has less usable capacity than the nameplate suggests once cable, hose, and wrist-mounted equipment are added. Reach and work envelope determine whether the robot can service your fixtures without a base extension or pedestal change, and mounting orientation, floor, shelf, or inverted, changes which variant of a given model applies.
Axis count matters for path control and reach into tooling; six-axis articulated robots dominate the ABB range, though special families exist for painting and palletizing tasks.
Controller generation is just as important as the arm. This inventory spans S4C, S4C+, S4P+, IRC5, and IRC5P controllers. Older S4-family controllers run BaseWare OS 2.x through 4.0.xx and have a shrinking pool of spare boards and drive units. IRC5 controllers, running RobotWare 5 or 6, have wider parts availability, more current software options, and support current RobotStudio versions. The controller you get with a given arm limits which software options, fieldbus modules, and safety configurations are practical.
Inspection Checklist for Used ABB Robots
Before buying any used ABB robot, work through a documented inspection rather than relying on a visual check alone. At minimum, confirm the following on the exact unit, by serial number, before it ships.
- Servo-on hours, motion hours, and cycle counts, where available
- Alarm and event history, not just current fault-free status
- Reducer backlash and abnormal noise on each axis at low speed and under load
- Grease condition and any leakage at axis reducers
- Mastering status and repeatability after a warm-up cycle
- Controller and robot backup battery condition
- Condition of cables, dress pack, connectors, and teach pendant
- Brake, e-stop, deadman switch, and safety-interface function on all axes
- Installed RobotWare software options and license transferability
- A complete backup of programs, calibration data, and system parameters
A robot that passes this list still needs the paperwork: get the model, serial number, year, payload and reach variant, controller serial number, and software version in writing before you pay.
What Drives Used ABB Robot Price
Used ABB robot price depends on more than the arm itself. Controller generation is the biggest single factor: IRC5-based units generally command more than S4C or S4C+ systems because of parts availability, current RobotStudio compatibility, and remaining service life on drive and computer boards. Condition, new, refurbished, or used, shifts price against the labor and parts already put into the unit. Payload class matters too; a 5 kg small-parts robot and a 340 kg IRB 7600 are priced on entirely different scales.
Included options move the number as well. A unit with a working dress pack, teach pendant, integrated vision license, or a welding or painting package is worth more than the same arm sold bare. Missing cables, an unmastered arm, or a controller without its original software options should be reflected in the price you are quoted.
Lead time is the other side of the comparison. New ABB robots are quoted against current production schedules and options, which vary by model and region. A used or refurbished unit already in inventory can often move faster once condition and scope are confirmed, but that should be verified at the time of quote rather than assumed.
