Condition terms are not universal across the used-robot market, so we define them plainly. New means never installed or cycled. Used means the robot is functional and was pulled from service but has not received refurbishment work. Refurbished means the unit went through cleaning, visual inspection, mechanical and electrical testing, battery replacement where required, and calibration or mastering verification, with demonstrably defective components replaced.
Refurbishment scope is not standardized between suppliers. Ask for a written test report, a list of replaced parts, the alarm-history download, a controller backup, and stated warranty terms before you commit to a unit. Some listings are arm-only, meaning the mechanical unit is sold without a matching controller; confirm controller compatibility separately.

A used robot with a clean alarm history and verified mastering can perform to the same repeatability spec as a new one; the trade-off is a shorter or absent parts pipeline for older controller generations and no factory warranty.
Choosing the right model and controller
Match payload to the fully dressed tool: torch, wire feeder mount, dress pack, and cable weight all add to the rated payload, not just the torch alone. As reference points from the current listing, the FANUC ARC Mate 100iD carries 12 kg at 1,441 mm reach, the ARC Mate 120iB/10L carries 10 kg at 1,885 mm, and the ARC Mate 100iC/6L carries 6 kg at 1,632 mm. All are six-axis machines; verify horizontal reach versus maximum reach against the manufacturer’s data sheet for your part geometry and mounting orientation.
Controller generation matters as much as the arm. FANUC arc-welding robots have shipped with R-J2, R-J3, R-J3iB, R-J3iC, R-30iA, R-30iB, and R-30iB Plus controllers; Yaskawa has shipped XRC, NX100, DX100, DX200, and YRC1000. Controller compatibility depends on servo amplifiers, motors, encoders, software revision, teach pendant, and installed options, not on the controller name alone. Older controllers can mean scarcer teach pendants and fewer software options for seam tracking, weaving, or fieldbus communication.
Inspection checklist before you buy
Before you commit to a used or refurbished unit, work through the same checks an integration engineer would run in the shop:
- Request servo hours, motion hours, weld hours, cycle counts, and controller power-on hours separately; each indicates a different aspect of prior use.
- Download and review the alarm history for recurring encoder, overcurrent, overtemperature, communication, collision, and servo alarms rather than trusting a current no-alarm state.
- Check every axis reducer for backlash, abnormal noise, binding, oil or grease leakage, overheating, and evidence of collision damage.
- Confirm mastering was verified after any transport, motor or encoder work, battery failure, or collision.
- Ask when encoder and controller backup batteries were last replaced; depleted batteries can cause loss of position or mastering data.
- Inspect dress cables, teach-pendant cable, torch cables, motor cables, encoder cables, and connectors for cuts, abrasion, crushing, and heat damage.
- Confirm installed software options, fieldbus cards, and welding interface, and request a full controller backup including programs, mastering data, parameters, I/O configuration, and frame and tool data.
What drives used robot pricing
Used welding robot pricing moves with controller generation first: an R-30iB Plus or YRC1000 platform carries more software options and a longer parts runway than an R-J3iB or XRC 2001 system, and that shows up in the ask. Condition is the second driver — new (never-used) units, refurbished units with documented testing, and used-as-is units are priced differently because the labor and parts behind each differ.
Payload class matters: a 6 kg arc-welding robot and a 240 kg unit are not comparable machines, and neither is a compact arc robot next to a full welding cell with positioner and fixturing. Included options change the number too — vision, a complete welding package, dress pack, spare teach pendant, and positioner or external axes all add value over a bare arm.
Lead time is a separate factor from price. New-robot lead time depends on the manufacturer’s current configuration and region and should come from a written factory quotation, not a general estimate. Used-robot lead time depends on inventory status, inspection or refurbishment queue, missing components, and any export or transport requirements; get a committed ship date in writing before you plan around it.
