New Versus Refurbished Versus Used

New units in this inventory are never-used FANUC robots with no production service history. Used units have run in production and are sold largely as removed, with condition disclosed but without a refurbishment pass. Refurbished units have gone through inspection, cleaning, and targeted repair before resale.

A typical refurbishment on a FANUC arm and controller addresses the reducer and gearbox condition, grease service at axis and wrist points, dress-pack and motor cable inspection, encoder and controller battery replacement, mastering verification, and functional checks on the teach pendant, motors, and brakes. Failed connectors, worn seals, and degraded cables are replaced as needed, and the controller software image and option set are documented.

Choosing The Right Model

Selecting the right used FANUC starts with payload at the wrist, not the nameplate rating alone. Add the weight of the end-of-arm tool, gripper, welding torch, or paint applicator, plus any workpiece, before comparing to the robot’s rated payload and load inertia limits. Reach and work envelope must clear fixtures, conveyors, and guarding in three dimensions, not just the horizontal radius. Mounting orientation—floor, wall, shelf, or upside-down—affects both the mechanical unit and the software configuration loaded on the controller.

Before buying any used FANUC robot, verify condition with more than a demonstration cycle. Request the following at minimum:

  • Servo-on hours, motion hours, and controller power-on hours from the maintenance counters
  • Full alarm history, checking for recurring servo, encoder, overtravel, collision, or overheat faults
  • Reducer and gearbox check for backlash, noise, vibration, leakage, or overheating under load
  • Mastering status and calibration data, confirmed rather than assumed
  • Encoder and controller battery condition, since depleted batteries can cause position data loss
  • Dress-pack, motor, and teach-pendant cables inspected for flex fatigue, crushed sections, or oil contamination
  • Teach pendant function, including display, emergency stop, enable switch, and deadman switch
  • Software options and license list matched against the application’s fieldbus, vision, or welding requirements
  • Controller backup including TP programs, frame and tool data, I/O configuration, and electrical schematics

What Drives Used Robot Price

FANUC robot price depends on more than the mechanical arm. Controller generation is a major factor: robots on R-30iB or R-30iB Plus controllers typically command more than comparable arms on older R-J3iB or R-J3iC controllers, because software options and parts are easier to source. Condition—new, refurbished, or used—also shifts price, along with payload class; a light ARC Mate or LR Mate is priced differently than a heavy R-2000iC or M-900iB handling robot.

Included options change the comparison further. A dress pack, application-specific software, vision, a complete teach pendant, and cables are part of what you are paying for, not extras.
